The best things to do in Houston on Christmas Day 2026 are Houston Zoo Lights, Sugar Land Holiday Lights, Moody Gardens and a free drive through River Oaks. Updated October 2026: every pick below has a confirmed 2026 Christmas Day schedule, or it's a public park or street open every day. The biggest news is the zoo. According to the Houston Zoo, Zoo Lights opens on December 25 for the first time in the event's history, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Here's what the venues themselves have confirmed. Sugar Land Holiday Lights runs Christmas Day from 6 to 10 p.m. with 3.5 million lights, per its official site. Moody Gardens in Galveston stays open on Christmas Day, with more than 2 million lights on its Holiday Lights Trail. Hermann Park Conservancy lists the park's grounds as open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Buffalo Bayou Partnership keeps Buffalo Bayou Park open 365 days a year.

What's Open in Houston on Christmas Day 2026?

Houston slows down on December 25, but it doesn't shut down. Light shows, two big parks and one major Galveston attraction all keep their gates open.

  • Houston Zoo Lights: open 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., a first for the event.

  • Sugar Land Holiday Lights: open 6 to 10 p.m. at Constellation Field.

  • Moody Gardens: open on Christmas Day, with a Christmas Day brunch, a buffet, a plated lunch and a four-course dinner at Shearn's.

  • Magical Winter Lights: open on every major holiday, including Christmas, at its new 2026 home at Katy Mills.

  • Parks and light neighborhoods: Hermann Park and Buffalo Bayou Park are open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the neighborhood displays cost nothing.

How Did We Choose These 11 Christmas Day Picks?

Most Christmas guides still list last year's hours. We checked every venue's own 2026 schedule this October and cut anything that hadn't confirmed December 25.

  • Confirmed or cut: each ticketed pick has a published 2026 Christmas Day schedule from the venue itself.

  • Public spaces count: parks open every day and public streets with neighborhood lights made the list.

  • Left off for now: Ice at Discovery Green, Kemah Boardwalk and Santa's Wonderland haven't posted 2026 Christmas Day hours yet.

  • One honest caveat: Magical Winter Lights' own site lists two different holiday hour ranges and two pricing messages for 2026.

  • We'll keep it current: as more venues confirm their December schedules, we'll add them here.

Do You Need Tickets in Advance on Christmas Day?

For the big light shows, yes. Christmas Day is a holiday night, and the ticketed events sell by date.

  • Zoo Lights: tickets are sold online only and are valid only for the date you choose.

  • Sugar Land Holiday Lights: early bird tickets start at $15, so buy before prices rise.

  • Moody Gardens dining: reservations are recommended for every holiday meal, including Christmas Day brunch.

  • Magical Winter Lights: confirm the 2026 price on the official site before you go.

  • Parks and neighborhoods: Hermann Park, Buffalo Bayou Park and the light neighborhoods need no tickets at all.

What's Closed (and What's on TV) on Christmas Day 2026?

A few big names close or change hours on December 25. Check these before you build your day around them.

  • Houston Zoo by day: closed for daytime admission on Christmas and closed all day on Christmas Eve. Only Zoo Lights opens at night.

  • Houston Museum of Natural Science: open on all holidays except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

  • Rockets: no Christmas Day game in 2026, per ABC13.

  • Texans: they play on Christmas Eve, at the Philadelphia Eagles at 8:15 p.m.

  • NFL on TV: Christmas Day brings Rams–Seahawks, Bills–Broncos and Packers–Bears, so plan a light show around kickoff.

How Should You Plan a Full Christmas Day in Houston?

The easiest plan follows the light. Spend daylight outdoors for free, then pick one ticketed show after dark.

  • Morning: walk Hermann Park or Buffalo Bayou Park while the city is quiet.

  • Midday: drive to Galveston for Moody Gardens' Christmas Day brunch, then stay for the lights trail.

  • Evening in the city: Zoo Lights from 5:30 p.m. if you're staying near the Museum District.

  • Evening in Fort Bend: Sugar Land Holiday Lights from 6 p.m. for families on the southwest side.

  • Free finish: drive River Oaks on the way home.
